TBSV is a tombusvirus first reported in tomatoes in 1935. It causes stunting of growth. The virus is a spherical virus with a triangulation number of T = 3, hence has 180 subunits of capsid protein. In 1978, its structure was determined by x-ray crystallography by Stephen C. Harrison.

En 1978 Stephen C. Harrison determinó la primera estructura tridimensional de una cápside vírica, la del virus del tomate achaparrado peludo. El virus disminuye el crecimiento o incluso anula la aparición de los tomates.
